How accurate is this BAC calculator?
This calculator uses the Widmark formula — the same method used in forensic alcohol calculations — but individual variation is significant. Genetics, liver health, hydration, medications, food intake, drinking pattern, and the exact alcohol content of each drink can cause real BAC to differ from this estimate by ±20% or more. Treat the result as an educational rough estimate only, never as a substitute for a breathalyzer or a clearance to drive.
What is the legal BAC limit in the US?
The per se driving limit is 0.08% in all 50 states for drivers 21 and over operating standard passenger vehicles, except Utah, which lowered its limit to 0.05% in 2018. Commercial drivers (CDL holders) face a 0.04% limit when operating commercial vehicles. Drivers under 21 are subject to zero-tolerance laws — most states treat any detectable BAC (typically 0.01–0.02%) as a violation. You can still be charged with impaired driving below the per se limit if an officer determines you are impaired.
How does food affect alcohol absorption and BAC?
Eating before or while drinking slows the rate at which alcohol moves from the stomach into the bloodstream, which lowers your peak BAC and stretches the absorption curve over a longer window. Fatty and protein-rich foods are especially effective. Once alcohol is already in your bloodstream, however, food does not reduce BAC — eating a meal at 2 AM after drinking will not bring you back down faster. Eat during drinking, not after.
Why do women metabolize alcohol differently from men?
Two main biological factors apply at any given weight. First, women have a lower percentage of body water and a higher percentage of body fat on average, so the same dose of alcohol distributes into a smaller volume — concentrating it. How long until I can drive after drinking?
Your body eliminates alcohol at about 0.015% BAC per hour and that rate cannot be sped up. If your BAC is 0.10%, it takes roughly 6 hours and 40 minutes to return to 0.00% and about 1 hour 20 minutes to drop below 0.08%. If you stop drinking at 2 AM at 0.12%, you may still be over the legal limit at 7 AM. The only safe rule is: if you have been drinking at all that evening, do not drive — sleep, hydrate, eat in the morning, and re-evaluate the next day.
Why is this different from a breathalyzer reading?
A breathalyzer measures Breath Alcohol Content (BrAC) in real time from your exhaled air and converts it to BAC using a 2,100:1 blood-to-breath ratio. It captures your actual BAC at the moment of testing, including absorption that this calculator cannot model in detail. The Widmark formula here projects an average peak based on your inputs and applies a flat elimination rate; it does not know your stomach contents, your absorption phase, or your recent drink-to-drink timing. Only an instrument-measured reading should ever be used for legal or safety decisions.
Is BAC influenced by medications?
Yes — significantly, and not in ways the Widmark formula can predict. Opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Valium), sedative sleep aids, many antihistamines, certain antidepressants, and some antibiotics either compound impairment or slow alcohol metabolism. Stimulant medications can mask subjective intoxication without lowering BAC. Even at a 'low' BAC, the combination can produce blackout, respiratory depression, or dangerous impairment. Read every medication label for alcohol warnings and ask a pharmacist if you are unsure.
Is it safe to drive if I am under 0.08%?
No. NHTSA crash data shows measurable impairment of reaction time, lane tracking, and decision-making starting at 0.02% BAC, and crash risk roughly doubles between 0.05% and 0.08%. The 0.08% number is the point at which criminal penalties apply per se — it is not a 'safe' threshold and not a green light. If you have been drinking at all, the safe choice is not to drive.
Does tolerance lower my actual BAC?
No. Tolerance changes how impaired you feel at a given BAC, not how much alcohol is in your blood. A heavy drinker may walk and speak normally at 0.15%, but their reaction time, judgment, and crash risk are still impaired by the same physiology — and the breathalyzer reads the same 0.15%. Police, courts, and crash statistics care about BAC, not how 'fine' you feel.
What is the difference between BAC and BrAC?
BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) is measured directly from a blood draw and expressed as grams of alcohol per 100 mL of blood (%). BrAC (Breath Alcohol Content) is what handheld breathalyzers measure — alcohol in exhaled deep-lung air — and is converted to BAC using an assumed 2,100:1 blood-to-breath partition ratio. The two are highly correlated and US laws written in BAC terms are enforced against BrAC results, but they are not identical measurements. Evidential breath testers used at police stations are calibrated and certified instruments.
Can I beat a breathalyzer with mints, hyperventilation, or holding my breath?
No. Common myths — breath mints, mouthwash, hyperventilating, holding your breath, putting a penny in your mouth — either do not affect the reading or actually push it higher. Modern evidential breath testers use slope detection and require a deep-lung sample over a sustained exhalation, which defeats most tricks. The only reliable way to lower a BrAC reading is time.
How many drinks can I have and still drive?
There is no universally safe number, and this is the wrong question to ask. A 130 lb woman can exceed 0.08% after 2 drinks in an hour; a 200 lb man may still be under 0.08% after 3 — but both are impaired. The right rule is simple: if you plan to drive, drink zero alcohol. If you have already had any alcohol, arrange a rideshare, taxi, designated driver, or somewhere to sleep.
