What Is a Standard Drink?

A 'standard drink' contains about 14 grams (0.6 oz) of pure alcohol. This equals:

Edge case: rapid drinking pushes a small person over 0.08%

A 140 lb female drinks 4 standard cocktails in under 1 hour at a happy hour — the classic 'rapid drinking' pattern that the Widmark formula handles poorly because absorption hasn't completed.

How it works

This calculator implements the Widmark equation, first published by Swedish scientist Erik Widmark in 1932 and still the foundation of forensic alcohol estimation. The formula models BAC as the mass of alcohol consumed divided by the mass of body water that dilutes it, minus the alcohol already eliminated by the liver. In the imperial form used here, BAC% = (alcohol oz × 5.14) ÷ (weight lb × r) − 0.015 × hours. The constant 5.14 converts ounces of alcohol and pounds of body mass into a percent-by-weight result.

The Widmark factor r approximates the fraction of body mass made up of water, since alcohol distributes only through body water and not through fat. The defaults used here are r = 0.68 for men and r = 0.55 for women, the values originally derived by Widmark and still cited by the NHTSA and most US state DMV guidance. Body composition varies — leaner adults have a higher r, adults with more body fat have a lower r — so the same drinks and weight can produce different real BACs in different bodies.

Standard-drink accounting assumes 0.6 oz (about 14 g) of pure ethanol per drink, the NIAAA US standard. A 12 oz beer at 5% ABV, a 5 oz pour of 12% wine, and a 1.5 oz pour of 40% spirits all contain that 0.6 oz. Craft IPAs at 7–9% ABV, restaurant wine pours of 6–8 oz, and home pours of spirits are commonly 1.5–2× a standard drink, so the input field is the place where most people accidentally underestimate their intake.

Elimination is modeled as a flat 0.015% BAC per hour, the average linear rate for adults. Real elimination is zero-order kinetics — it does not speed up with coffee, food, showers, or exercise. The output also shows time-to-0.08% and time-to-0.05% by dividing the BAC drop required by 0.015. Because absorption from the stomach is not instant, real BAC continues to rise for 30–90 minutes after the last drink before this elimination curve begins, so the calculator's snapshot can understate the imminent peak when drinking has been recent or rapid.
