Our health and fitness calculators turn published equations into something you can use in under a minute. This page documents the exact formulas behind each tool, the primary sources we cite, the assumptions baked into the math, and the editorial review process we apply before any number reaches the page. Use it as a reference if you want to audit a result, compare our output with another estimator, or understand why two calculators can give different answers for the same person.

Canonical formulas we implement

Mifflin-St Jeor (resting metabolic rate)

Our BMR calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics evidence analysis identified as the most reliable predictor of resting metabolic rate in healthy non-obese and obese adults. For men: 10 x weight(kg) + 6.25 x height(cm) - 5 x age(y) + 5. For women: the same with -161 instead of +5. We show Harris-Benedict and Katch-McArdle as alternates so readers can compare estimates.

Tanaka maximum heart rate

For target heart rate zones we default to Tanaka's regression (208 - 0.7 x age) rather than the older 220 - age rule of thumb, which the ACSM Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription notes can over- or under-estimate true maximum heart rate by 10 to 12 beats per minute depending on age. We surface both formulas and let readers switch.

Body Mass Index (Quetelet)

BMI is mass in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, originally Adolphe Quetelet's social-statistics index and adopted by the WHO as a population-level screening tool. We display the WHO adult cut-points (underweight under 18.5, normal 18.5 to 24.9, overweight 25 to 29.9, obese 30 and above) and add a standing note that BMI does not measure body composition.

One-rep max (Epley and Brzycki)

Our 1RM calculator returns both Epley (weight x (1 + reps/30)) and Brzycki (weight x 36/(37 - reps)) because no single equation dominates across rep ranges. Epley tends to overestimate at low reps; Brzycki diverges above 10 reps. We cap predictions at 10 reps and warn readers that submaximal estimation is least accurate near true maximum.

US Navy circumference body fat

Our body-fat estimator implements the Hodgdon and Beckett US Navy equations, which use neck, waist, and (for women) hip circumferences with height. The method was validated against hydrostatic weighing for military fitness assessments and typically agrees within 3 to 4 percentage points for adults of average build.

Naegele's rule (estimated due date)

Our pregnancy due-date calculator applies Naegele's rule: last menstrual period plus 280 days, assuming a 28-day cycle. We adjust by cycle-length offset when the reader supplies it, and we cite ACOG's note that ultrasound dating in the first trimester is more accurate than LMP-based estimates.

Editorial review process

Every health and fitness calculator is built by writing the formula and its source citation first, then the UI. A reviewer with a quantitative background checks the implementation against the cited paper or guideline, runs the calculator against at least three published worked examples, and signs off the page. We re-audit each tool annually or whenever a cited body (WHO, ACSM, ACOG, NIH) updates the underlying guidance. The lastReviewed date on each calculator reflects the most recent full audit, not a content tweak. If a reader reports a discrepancy we re-verify the math before responding, and we publish a correction note at the bottom of the page when a result changes.

Common pitfalls we flag for readers

  • Reading BMI without context. BMI cannot distinguish lean mass from fat mass, so muscular athletes and people with low bone density both get misclassified. We surface this caveat next to every BMI result and link to waist-to-height and body-fat tools.
  • Treating 220 - age as a true maximum heart rate. The 220 - age formula has a standard deviation of roughly 10 to 12 bpm, which makes target-zone prescriptions noticeably off for younger and older adults. We default to Tanaka and recommend a graded exercise test for athletes who need precision.
  • Trusting a single 1RM formula. Epley, Brzycki, Lander, and Lombardi diverge meaningfully above 6 reps. We show at least two estimates and warn that submaximal prediction is least accurate when you are closest to a true max.
  • Using BMR as a calorie target. BMR is resting expenditure, not maintenance. Multiplying by an activity factor gives TDEE, which is the number to budget against - but activity factors themselves carry 10 to 20 percent error.
  • Confusing waist circumference protocols. WHO measures at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the iliac crest; NIH and NCEP measure at the iliac crest itself. The two protocols can differ by a centimetre or more. We label which protocol each tool uses.
  • Dating pregnancy from LMP alone. Naegele's rule assumes ovulation on day 14 of a 28-day cycle. Cycle-length variation and irregular ovulation routinely shift due dates by a week or more, which is why ACOG prefers first-trimester ultrasound for clinical dating.

Glossary

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)
Energy your body uses at complete rest to maintain vital functions, measured in kilocalories per day.
TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)
BMR multiplied by an activity factor that accounts for movement, exercise, and the thermic effect of food.
RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate)
Closely related to BMR but measured under less strict conditions; typically 10 percent higher than true BMR.
MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task)
A multiple of resting oxygen uptake (1 MET = 3.5 ml O2/kg/min) used to express exercise intensity.
VO2 max
The maximum rate of oxygen consumption during incremental exercise, the gold-standard measure of aerobic fitness.
HRmax
Maximum heart rate, the highest heart rate achievable during all-out effort; estimated by Tanaka or measured by graded exercise test.
Target heart rate zone
A percentage range of HRmax (often 50 to 85 percent) used to prescribe aerobic exercise intensity.
1RM (One-Rep Max)
The maximum weight you can lift once with correct form; predicted from submaximal sets by Epley, Brzycki, or similar equations.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared; a population-level screen, not an individual diagnostic.
Waist-to-height ratio
Waist circumference divided by height; a simple proxy for central adiposity that complements BMI.
Body fat percentage
Fat mass expressed as a percentage of total body mass, estimated here from circumferences using the US Navy method.
Lean body mass
Total body mass minus fat mass, used in the Katch-McArdle BMR equation.
Naegele's rule
Estimated due date method: last menstrual period plus 280 days, assuming a 28-day cycle.
Gestational age
Weeks elapsed since the first day of the last menstrual period, the standard pregnancy dating convention.
