Understanding Age Calculation

Age calculation seems straightforward—subtract birth year from current year. But it's more nuanced than that. Your exact age depends on whether you've had your birthday this year, and calculating months and days requires accounting for varying month lengths.

This calculator provides your precise age broken down into multiple time units, along with fun facts about your birthday.

How Age Is Calculated

Age calculation follows specific rules to handle the complexity of the calendar system:

📆

Year Calculation

You turn one year older on your birthday. If today is before your birthday this year, you're one year younger than the simple year subtraction would suggest.

🗓️

Month Handling

Months have different lengths (28-31 days). The calculator accounts for this when determining exact months. Born on the 31st? In months with 30 days, the month changes on the 30th.

📐

Leap Years

Born on February 29? Your birthday is typically celebrated on February 28 (or March 1) in non-leap years. This calculator handles leap year birthdays correctly.

🌍

Time Zones

Age is calculated based on local calendar dates, not exact moments. You don't need to know your exact birth time for this calculation.

Generation Classifications

Your birth year places you in a generational cohort with distinct cultural characteristics:

Examples

Age on a specific date

Someone born on March 14, 1990 wants to know their exact age on May 15, 2026.

Result36 years, 2 months, 1 day

Year difference is 2026 - 1990 = 36. Because the birthday (Mar 14) already passed by May 15, no year is subtracted. From Mar 14 to May 14 is 2 full months; the trailing day from May 14 to May 15 adds 1 day, giving 36 years, 2 months, and 1 day.

Frequently asked questions

How is age calculated?

Age is the time elapsed between your birth date and the target date, measured in completed years, months, and days. The calculator first subtracts birth year from target year, then subtracts one year if the birthday has not yet occurred in the target year. Months and days are filled in by borrowing from larger units when needed, accounting for varying month lengths.

What if I was born on February 29?

Leap-day babies technically only have a calendar birthday every four years. In non-leap years, civil records usually treat February 28 or March 1 as the legal birthday depending on jurisdiction. This calculator computes the day count accurately and rolls the birthday to the same March 1 or February 28 convention used by most date libraries.

Why is age calculated in years, months, and days instead of just total days?

Because months and years are not fixed-length units, people intuitively think of age in years (and parents in months). Showing 36 years 2 months 1 day is more meaningful than 13,213 days. The calculator also gives total weeks, days, hours, and minutes for those who want them.

Does this calculator account for time zones?

No. Age is computed from calendar dates, not from exact birth timestamps, so time zone offsets do not change the result. If you want age to the minute across time zones, you would need to know your exact birth time UTC and the target moment UTC.

Can I calculate age between any two dates, not just from today?

Yes. Enter a birth date and then change the 'Calculate Age On' field to any past or future date. The same year-month-day arithmetic applies, so you can find out how old someone was at a graduation, wedding, or any historical event.

How accurate are the hours and minutes shown?

Hours and minutes are derived from the total millisecond difference between midnight on the birth date and midnight on the target date in your browser's local time zone. They are exact for whole-day intervals; for sub-day precision you would need to supply a birth time.

What date format does the calculator expect?

The date picker uses your browser's locale. Internally dates are stored in ISO 8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD), which avoids the day-month vs month-day ambiguity that causes errors with formats like 03/04/2026.
