Unlike most substances, water has a beautifully simple relationship between volume and mass in the metric system: 1 liter of water weighs exactly 1 kilogram (at 4°C, where water is densest).

This convenient 1:1 relationship is by design—the kilogram was originally defined as the mass of one liter of water. In imperial units, the relationship is less elegant: a US gallon weighs 8.34 pounds, and a cubic foot weighs 62.4 pounds.

1 US gallon equals 3.78541 liters. Because water density is 1 kg per liter, those 3.78541 liters mass 3.78541 kg. Converting to pounds: 3.78541 ÷ 0.453592 ≈ 8.345 lb. FEMA's standard recommendation of 1 gallon per person per day means a 3-day supply for a family of four weighs about 12 × 8.345 ≈ 100 lb — useful context when sizing a backpack or kit.

Intermediate: filling a 75-liter aquarium

An aquarist is buying a 75-liter freshwater tank and wants to confirm their tabletop can support the filled weight before adding substrate.

Result75 L of water weighs 75 kg (165.3 lb). Plus glass, gravel, rocks, and equipment, plan on at least 100 kg total.

At 1 kg per liter, 75 liters of water is exactly 75 kg. Converted to pounds: 75 ÷ 0.453592 ≈ 165.3 lb. A typical 75 L aquarium adds 15–25 kg of glass plus 10–20 kg of substrate and décor, so the finished setup commonly weighs 100–120 kg in a footprint of about 0.5 m². Most household tabletops are not rated for that point load — a dedicated stand is safer.

Edge case: ounces vs. fluid ounces confusion

A recipe calls for 16 fluid ounces of water, and the cook only has a kitchen scale that reads in ounces (mass).

Result16 fl oz of water = 0.473 L = 0.473 kg ≈ 16.69 oz on the scale (about 1.04 lb).

1 US fluid ounce equals 29.5735 mL, so 16 fl oz = 473.18 mL = 0.473 L. At 1 kg per liter, that water masses 473.18 g. Converting to weight ounces: 473.18 ÷ 28.3495 ≈ 16.69 oz. The fluid ounce (a volume unit) and the ounce (a mass unit) are close enough for water that recipes often say '1 fl oz ≈ 1 oz', but the actual ratio is 1.044 — small but worth knowing for precise baking.

How it works

Every conversion in this tool routes through two reference numbers: liters for volume, and kilograms for weight. When you enter a value, the converter first normalizes it to liters using the unit table (1 gallon = 3.78541 L, 1 cup = 0.236588 L, 1 cubic foot = 28.3168 L, 1 cubic meter = 1,000 L, and so on). It then multiplies by water's density to get kilograms, and finally fans the result out into every supported volume and weight unit.

The density value used is 1 kg per liter — the exact value for water at 4°C (39°F), where water is densest. From about 0°C through 30°C the density only drifts between 0.9996 and 0.9999 kg/L, so for everyday tap-water temperatures the 1:1 ratio is accurate to better than 0.5%. The number was actually the historical basis for the kilogram itself: in 1795 the French Revolutionary government defined 1 kg as the mass of 1 liter of water at 4°C.

Imperial conversions are not as clean because the gallon and pound were never linked through water. A US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, and a pound is defined as 0.45359237 kg. Combining those gives 1 US gallon of water = 8.345 lb. The cubic-foot figure of 62.4 lb falls out the same way: 1 ft³ = 7.48 US gallons, and 7.48 × 8.345 ≈ 62.4.

Note that in health and fitness, 'water weight' has a second meaning — short-term fluid retention driven by sodium, carbohydrate intake, hormones, and glycogen storage (each gram of stored glycogen binds about 3 grams of water). Does eating a lot of salt make me retain water?
