A homeowner planning a re-roof measures the ground footprint of their single-story house at 1,500 square feet. The roof is a simple gable with a 6/12 pitch (6 inches of rise per 12 inches of run). They want the actual roof surface area so they can order shingles and underlayment, plus a waste allowance for cuts at the ridge, eaves, and valleys.

ResultActual roof area is 1,677 ft² (about 16.77 squares). With a 10% waste factor, order materials for 1,845 ft² — roughly 18.5 squares of shingles, or about 56 bundles at 3 bundles per square.

Multiply the footprint by the pitch multiplier: 1,500 × 1.118 = 1,677 ft². The pitch multiplier comes from the geometry of a right triangle — for a 6/12 pitch, the rafter length per foot of run is √(6² + 12²)/12 = √180/12 ≈ 1.118. Add 10% for waste: 1,677 × 1.10 = 1,845 ft². Divide by 100 to get squares (the standard roofing unit): 18.45 squares. Most three-tab and architectural shingle bundles cover about 33 ft², so 1,845 ÷ 33 ≈ 56 bundles. What's the difference between roof area and roof footprint?

The footprint is the flat ground area the roof covers, measured as if you were looking straight down from above. The actual roof area is larger because the roof is sloped — the rafters travel a longer distance than the horizontal run. For any pitched roof, multiply the footprint by the pitch multiplier to get the true surface area you need to cover with materials.

How does roof pitch affect the area?

Steeper pitches produce more surface area for the same footprint. The pitch multiplier is √(rise² + run²)/run. Common values: a 4/12 pitch gives 1.054, 6/12 gives 1.118, 8/12 gives 1.202, and a 12/12 (45°) gives 1.414. A 1,500 ft² footprint becomes 1,581 ft² at 4/12, 1,677 ft² at 6/12, and 2,121 ft² at 12/12 — the same house can need 34% more material on a steep pitch than a low-slope one.

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. It's the standard unit contractors and material suppliers use for pricing and ordering shingles, underlayment, and labor. A 1,677 ft² roof is 16.77 squares. Shingle bundles are typically sold three to a square (each bundle covering about 33 ft²), so you'd order roughly 51 bundles before waste.

How much waste should I add when ordering roofing materials?

Add 10% for a simple gable roof, 12-15% for a roof with hips, and 15-20% for cut-up roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, or skylights. Waste covers starter strips at the eaves, cuts at valleys and hips, ridge caps, and the inevitable damaged or mis-cut pieces. Ordering tight risks an emergency mid-job trip to the supplier; ordering generous leaves you with usable leftovers for repairs.

Do I need to add area for the ridge, eaves, and valleys?

The pitch multiplier already accounts for the main roof planes meeting at ridges and valleys, but materials for ridges and hips are typically ordered separately. Plan one linear foot of ridge cap shingles per foot of ridge and hip, and account for the eave overhang in your footprint measurement — if rafters extend 12 inches past the wall, measure to the drip edge, not the wall line. Valleys consume extra underlayment (often a metal or membrane liner) but no extra shingle area beyond standard waste.

Does this calculator work for hip roofs as well as gables?

Yes — the pitch multiplier applies to any roof where all planes share the same pitch, including hips. A hip roof has the same total surface area as a gable roof over the same footprint when the pitch matches, because the geometry redistributes the slope rather than adding to it. The difference is the cut waste: hip roofs need more material trimmed at the hip corners, so use a 12-15% waste factor instead of 10%. For multi-pitch roofs or shed dormers, calculate each plane separately and sum the results.
