What is a Board Foot?

A board foot is the standard unit of measurement for lumber in North America. One board foot equals a piece of wood 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long—or 144 cubic inches of wood. It measures volume, not surface area.

Lumber is priced by the board foot ($/BF), which allows fair pricing regardless of board dimensions. Hardwoods are typically sold by the board foot, while dimensional softwoods (2x4s, etc.) are sold by the linear foot.

Understanding board feet helps you estimate project costs, compare lumber prices, and avoid overpaying. A 1-inch thick, 6-inch wide, 8-foot board contains 4 board feet.

How to use this board foot calculator

  1. Enter Thickness in inches using the nominal (rough) thickness, not the surfaced thickness. A 4/4 hardwood board is 1 inch, 5/4 is 1.25, 6/4 is 1.5, and 8/4 is 2.
  2. Enter Width in inches using the nominal width before surfacing. For dimensional softwood like a 2×6, use the nominal 2 and 6, not the actual 1.5 and 5.5 — board-foot pricing is always calculated on nominal size.
  3. Enter Length and pick ft or in from the unit dropdown. Most lumber yards quote length in feet, so the default ft setting matches a typical sales ticket; use in for offcuts or short shop pieces.

Examples

Basic: five 1×8×10' walnut boards

A small shop is sourcing rough walnut for a tabletop and orders five boards at 1 inch thick, 8 inches wide, and 10 feet long from a local sawmill.

Result33.33 board feet total, or about $400 at $12/BF for FAS walnut.

Per board: (1 × 8 × 10) ÷ 12 = 6.667 BF. Total for five: 6.667 × 5 = 33.33 BF. At $12/BF that is 33.33 × 12 = $400.00. For a tabletop you would typically order an extra 20% on top of this for jointing waste, defects, and a spare board — about 40 BF, or roughly six boards instead of five.

Intermediate: 8/4 maple slab plus 4/4 stock

A workbench top calls for one 8/4 hard maple slab at 12 inches wide by 6 feet long, plus six 4/4 maple aprons at 6 inches wide by 5 feet long.

Result12.00 BF for the slab plus 15.00 BF for the aprons = 27.00 BF before waste.

Slab: (2 × 12 × 6) ÷ 12 = 12.00 BF. Aprons each: (1 × 6 × 5) ÷ 12 = 2.50 BF, times six = 15.00 BF. Total 27.00 BF. At $9/BF for FAS hard maple that is $243. Add a 20% waste allowance and round up to about 33 BF, or roughly $295, before you head to the yard.

Edge case: nominal-vs-actual confusion on a 2×4

A homeowner wants to compare buying eight 2×4×8' studs from a big-box store at $5.50 each to ordering by the board foot from a small yard at $1.20/BF.

Result5.33 BF per stud, 42.67 BF total = $51.20 by the board foot vs $44.00 by the piece — the per-piece price is cheaper here.

Per stud: (2 × 4 × 8) ÷ 12 = 5.33 BF. Total: 5.33 × 8 = 42.67 BF. At $1.20/BF that is $51.20. The board-foot calculation uses nominal 2 and 4, not the actual 1.5 × 3.5 — that is the industry convention defined by the American Lumber Standard. The piece price of $5.50 × 8 = $44.00 wins this comparison because softwood studs are sold dimensionally; board-foot pricing tends to pay off for hardwood and rough lumber, not surfaced dimensional softwood.

How it works

One board foot is defined as 144 cubic inches of lumber — the volume of a piece 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide, and 12 inches long, or equivalently about 0.00236 cubic meters. The standard formula is BF = (T × W × L) ÷ 12, where thickness and width are in inches and length is in feet. If your length is in inches instead of feet, the equivalent formula is BF = (T × W × L) ÷ 144. The calculator handles both by converting any inches-length input back to feet before applying the divide-by-12 form.

Board-foot pricing always uses nominal dimensions, not the surfaced (actual) size that comes off the planer. A 2×4 measures roughly 1.5 by 3.5 inches after surfacing, but lumber yards calculate and quote it as 2 by 4. Hardwood thickness uses the quarter-inch shorthand inherited from the National Hardwood Lumber Association grading rules — 4/4 is 1 inch rough, 5/4 is 1.25, 6/4 is 1.5, 8/4 is 2 — and the rough thickness is what counts on the invoice even after the mill surfaces it down a quarter inch.

The same formula scales to multi-board orders by multiplying single-board BF by quantity, and to cost by multiplying total BF by price per board foot. Hardwoods are almost universally sold $/BF because boards come in random widths and lengths that defeat per-piece pricing; surfaced dimensional softwoods like construction-grade 2×4s are typically sold per piece, even though their BF is well-defined. Knowing both lets you compare prices fairly across a sawmill quote (board foot) and a big-box stack (each).

Real projects need a waste allowance on top of the math. Rough lumber loses about a quarter inch per side when surfaced four sides (S4S), and crosscuts, ripping to width, defects, and end checks remove another 10–20% in usable yield. A common rule of thumb in the woodworking trade is to order 15–20% more board feet than the cut list demands; for highly figured hardwoods or boards with significant sapwood, 25–30% is safer.
