How much protein do I really need?

Is too much protein dangerous?
For healthy adults, no peer-reviewed evidence links high-protein diets (tested up to 1.4 g/lb / ~3.0 g/kg) to kidney damage, bone loss, or cardiovascular harm. The most common downside is opportunity cost — every gram of excess protein crowds out carbs or fats you might prefer to eat. If you already have kidney disease, your nephrologist will set a lower target; for everyone else, 'too much' usually just means 'wasted calories.'
Plant protein or animal protein — does it matter?

What's a complete protein, and do I have to combine plant sources in the same meal?

Should I use body weight or lean body mass?

Why does my number differ from another protein calculator?
Different calculators use different reference frameworks. Some use the RDA (0.8 g/kg minimum). Others use bodybuilding-magazine rules of thumb (sometimes as high as 1.5 g/lb). This calculator follows ISSN and ACSM position stands, which are the most-cited peer-reviewed recommendations: 1.6–2.2 g/kg for muscle gain, 2.0–2.6 g/kg for muscle retention during cutting. Pick a framework and stick with it for 6–8 weeks rather than chasing different numbers.
How does cooking affect protein content?
Cooking does not destroy protein — it denatures (unfolds) protein structures, which actually makes them more digestible. The protein gram count on a label refers to the raw or cooked food as listed; weight changes from cooking (water loss in meat, water gain in beans) shift the protein per cooked gram, not the protein per portion. A 6 oz raw chicken breast and the 4 oz it weighs after cooking contain the same total protein.
Will high protein make women 'bulky'?
No. Building visible muscle requires sustained heavy resistance training, a calorie surplus, and high testosterone — none of which come from eating protein alone. Female lifters at 1.6–2.2 g/kg get the same benefits men do: better recovery, better body composition, more lean mass relative to fat. The visible result is usually leaner and more defined, not larger.
