How it works

The calculator applies the standard trip-cost formula Cost=DistanceMPG×Gas Price\text{Cost} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{MPG}} \times \text{Gas Price}. It first computes gallons needed (distance ÷ MPG), then multiplies by the price per gallon to get total fuel cost. When the trip type is set to Round Trip, distance is doubled before the calculation.

Cost per mile is derived independently as price ÷ MPG, which is convenient for comparing two vehicles or two fuel types head-to-head. Cost per person divides the total fuel cost by the number of passengers (including the driver), so a 4-person carpool produces a per-seat number 4× lower than a solo trip.

Metric mode swaps units transparently: distance is kilometres, fuel economy is litres per 100 km (or km/L), and price is per litre. Internally the math is the same — fuel needed × price — only the unit labels change.
